Community-led projects are taking on the root causes of health problems in low-income neighborhoods, and a new round of funding promises to expand the efforts. For example, a BUILD (Bold, Upstream, Integrated, Local, Data-driven) project in Des Moines mapped pediatric asthma to poor housing: Spending $150,000 on home repairs meant an average of five fewer asthma episodes a month for more than 40 families. BUILD is backed by the Colorado Health Foundation, among others.
